2010-10-26
It is reported that some two-wheel tractors which the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expected to distribute in Mullaittivu and Vavunia Districts were allegedly distributed among people of his choice by MP Namal Rajapakse who attended the ceremony with a group of UPFA members, overruling the list of beneficiaries prepared by the ICRC.
The ceremony had been organized by Ms Maryse Limonar, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Vavuniya to distribute 400 hand tractors among the villagers in Mullattivu and Vavuniya Districts. A list of beneficiaries also had been prepared by the ICRC.
However amidst the resistance of the ICRC representatives, a group of MPs including Messrs Namal Rajapaksa, Manusha Nanayakkara, Saranatha Basnayake and Sri Ranga had distributed the tractors of their choice by force. Consequently Ms Maryse Limonar had walked to the rear of an ICRC vehicle and cried who couldn't hide her feelings.

Rajapakse’s UK tour ill fated –flounders again- UK refuses to guarantee security protection
(Lanka-e-News, Nov.29, 2010, 10.35AM) The UK tour of the President which was postponed earlier, and finally scheduled for 30 th this month has met with impediments again, according to reports.
The reason for this is, the UK officials have intimated to our High Commission in UK that they cannot guarantee security protection to him, adding that as the President’s tour is a private visit, they cannot assure his safety and security while he is there; and if he is making the visit in response to a UK Govt.’s invitation, they can provide security, but not otherwise, our High Commission sources say. Hence, the President’s tour is being reviewed, same sources say.
The President was to tour UK in response to an invitation from a SL University students Organization in UK. But because of the agitations of thousands of University students in UK these days, the police had been unable to control them. This situation has led the officials to take the decision against the President’s visit, reports say.
In addition, the Tamil Diaspora in that country is also lying in wait until the President arrives there to obtain a court warrant citing war crime charges against the President. At the celebrations of the LTTE great heroes’ day on the 27th, there had been a huge gathering of Tamil people. It is believed that the decision of the UK officials was also influenced by all this.
Moreover, the Sinhala Diaspora in UK which was with the Govt. during the period of the war and rendered assistance is also in bitter resentment against the Govt. This is supposed to be due to the cruelties and atrocities committed on Gen. Fonseka who won the war for the country and saved it from the terrorists. They had a number of protest campaigns against the Govt. in UK over this. This too would have contributed to the decision of the UK officials to advise against President’s tour.
It is also learnt that though the President made valiant efforts to get an appointment to meet the British Premier during this intended tour, there had been no positive response from that end.
Meanwhile, the group which is organizing the UK tour of the President had planned to go in two bus loads to vicinity of the University to welcome the President with seth pirith under the pretext of chanting pirith for the soldiers, This attempt has incurred the displeasure of the guests who came to know of the truth. They had berated the deceitful group saying ‘we will only chant seth pirith to the soldiers and not for the President’. They had scolded them and left.

A Jumbo Cabinet was formed to exalt some and hurt many -UNP media spokesman
(Lanka-e-News, Nov.29, 2010, 10.15PM) UNP media spokesman Gayantha Karunatileke said, the Govt. appointed a gigantic Cabinet of Ministers solely with the motive of exalting some and hurting many.
In UK. where the population is 61 million the cabinet had been pruned down to 23. In America where the population is 310 million, there are only 15 Ministers. In Canada which has a population of 33 million the number of Ministers is only 38. In Japan where the population is 127 million there are only 15 Ministers. India with a population of 191 million the Cabinet comprises only 34. Pakistan where the population is 171 million the Cabinet of Ministers is only 41. Even China where the population is 341 million the Cabinet is made up of only 50 Ministers. But in SL where the population is only 20 million, the cabinet comprises 61 Ministers which is the highest among all the countries, Karunatileke pointed out.
Karunatileke revealed these details when addressing a media briefing at the UNP media unit today (29). He also stated that to maintain this Jumbo Cabinet a sum of Rs. 220 million ! is needed per month, which monies the Govt. invariably collects by burdening the people by various levies, taxes and price hikes. Earlier Governments did everything possible to look after the welfare of the people, but with this Govt., people have to maintain it. Parasitic by nature the Govt. cannot change its inherent trait, he lamented.
The Govt. has appointed a further 96 Deputy Ministers on top of this. The Govt. has shut the mouths of the Ministers and Deputy Ministers by thrusting the appropriate soothers into their mouths according to the sizes of their feeding bottles regardless of the starvation of the people, he observed.
