Notre Association Humanitaire Franco-Européenne Sri Lankaise (AHFESL)

Our Humanitairan Association Européenne Franco-Sri Lankan (AHFESL)

Ask for protection of all the Sri Lankans of the world

Ask safety for all the Sri Lankans against the terrorist members of the Sri-Lanka LTTE Tamil which attacks in France and abroad. It is necessary to avoid the situation of 1983 in France.

These terrorists use civilians as human shield to attack the srilankan army, and in order to have time to find a means of saving their leader, V. Prabahkaran and some members important, towards another country. All these LTTE tamils terrorists in Sri-Lanka and abroad, want to save their leader at all costs. It is for this reason, that they make demonstrations everywhere in the world and say lies against the government and the Sri Lankan army. They try to make believe as in 1983 there is a civil war between Tamils and Sinhalese everywhere in the world. Today these terrorists attack with the Sinhaleses and even the tamils which are against their group LTTE. They attack and kill all those which are against them, they even killed a French police officer a few months ago, the Sri Lankan newspapers having confirmed that the people having made this crime, belonged to the terrorist group of the LTTE. They attacked the Sinhaleses by burning two Sinhalese stores in France, against the Sri Lankan Embassies in France and in Germany, against anti-LTTE demonstrators in Australia, many tamils civilians were even killed or attacked in France, Norway, in Sweden, in the Netherlands, in Canada, in the USA, etc… For this reason our association remains vigilant.

For a few days, certain leaders of the LTTE have surrended the Sri Lankan army, revealing many secrecies on the financing of their group and on which provided them material: the foreign governments and ONG helped them. We know for a long time that these terrorists receive the assistance of unquestionable ONG and certain states (like Norway) helping to develop by all the means their activity.

We thus ask you to protect by all the means alive the Sri-Lankan civilians in France against these terrorists in order to avoid a situation as in 1983 when several Sri Lankans (Singhalese and Tamouls) were killed in France. We hope that you will give also your protection to all associations anti-terrorists like ours. We ask that this protection be made for all the Sri Lankans living everywhere in the world by all the international governments. Our association made this request near the President of the French Republic and its Minister of Interior Department.

Association (AHFESL) 06.05.2009

AHFESL is the Web site who bring only the truth on Sri-Lanka

(AHFESL, 10.04.2009)

------------------------------------

This Sri Lankan Tamil terrorists group of LTTE always need to invent a civil war with their profit but which forever existed with Sri-Lanka or another share in the world. They thus try to create a civil war everywhere in the world while hoping to benefit from the international assistance like front.

We ask safety for all the Sri Lankans against the Tamil terrorist members of the LTTE which attacks in France and abroad. It is necessary to avoid the situation of 1983 in France where 5 Sri Lankans were killed. It should be prevented that a law of jungle settles in France as the president and the Minister for immigration said it. The April 4th, 2009, in Drancy, a Sinhalese was attacked with the axe by two Sri Lankan tamils supporting terrorists LTTE.

Sri-Lankan Tamils Terrorists of LTTE also start to make violences for the civilians in the foreign countries as in Sri-Lanka, they attacked on several occasions civilians of Sinhalese majority and even the Moslems, Tamils, who live everywhere in the world in particular anti-LTTE demonstrators in Australia. For a few many years, tamils members of associations anti-terrorist had were killed or attacked in France, Norway, Sweden, in the Netherlands, in Canada, in the USA, etc… These terrorists even attacked the Sri Lankan Embassies in France, in Germany, Norway, England, in India and the embassy of India in England, etc

They even killed a police officer in France a few months ago, the Sri Lankan newspapers having confirmed that the people having made this crime, belonged to the terrorist group of the LTTE.

They already attacked the Sinhaleses by burning two Sinhaleses stores in France. But at the beginning of April, they attacked a Sri-Lankan store named “ASIRI” in the 18th district of Paris (La Chapelle), where they ransacked the store and wounded three Sinhalese people with stabs (being called Nishantha, Saman and Sunil) in their lacerating the arms and cutting the mouth, the face… In Australia also, there were attacks with Melbourne at the time of a demonstration anti-terrorists more than two thousand Srilankan people before the Australian Parliament where two Srilankan have being hospitalized.

Since these recent events, large Sri-lankan newspapers required of the various states and associations to take the actions necessary to stop these violences and to protect their democracies before the situation does not worsen.

Our association wrote a mail in recommended to the President of the French Republic, Mr. Nicolas SARKOZY and with the Minister of Interior Department, Mrs. Alliot-Marie, in their explaining the situation and asking for to them the protection of all the Sri Lankans in France against these terrorists. These same protections are requested from the other countries on their premises to protect the Sri Lankans living and their people, without delay.

(AHFESL, 10.04.2009)

Assistance of the foreign authorities sought to capture LTTE extremists in foreign soils

(Lanka-e-News, 01.June.2009, 10.30PM) Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama says that the government has decided to seek support of authorities of several foreign countries to suppress the LTTE extremists, who were behind the attacks against expatriate Sri Lankans. The government also wishes to ban fundraising for LTTE too.

The Foreign Ministry says that the LTTE invests around US $ 300 million per annum raised from Tamil Diaspora for arms purchase and the drug trafficking. The LTTE associates in foreign soils are attempting to terrify the Diaspora Tamils who wish to invest in businesses in Sri Lanka. The Foreign Ministry is discussing the ways and means to suppress these actions, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said.

In addition, the Foreign Ministry has initiated steps to directly link with the organizations of expatriate Tamils, said Minister Bogollagama....

"Comment je me sens? Terrible. Je me sens si triste.

Tamil Tigers are "on the rampage in Toronto" Fire at Sri Lankan restaurant

(Lanka-e-News 23.May.2009 1.00PM) A suspicious overnight fire that gutted a Sri Lankan restaurant is evidence that the Tamil Tigers are "on the rampage in Toronto," charged Sri Lanka's consul general, who said the Sinhalese eatery had been previously targeted and harrassed by Tiger flag-waving motorists.

Consul General Bandula Jayasekara arrived at the Lanka Gardens restaurant at 220 Wexford Rd. to survey the damage caused to the restaurant, which sometimes caters Sri Lankan consular events in Toronto.

The Sri Lankan diplomat said Lanka Gardens owner Ranjith Tilakaratne told him in a 4:30 a.m. phone call that people waving Tamil Tiger flags had driven around his restaurant in previous weeks, honking their horns and shouting out the window.

As well, the glass on the restaurant's front door was smashed about two weeks ago, Tilakaratne's wife Chandrika confirmed at the scene.

Members of the Sinhalese community said the 2:45 a.m. blaze is a sign that tensions arising from Sri Lanka's 26-year Civil War have spilled over to Toronto and have escalated to violence.

Since January, thousands of Tamils have been regularly protesting in downtown Toronto against what they say is systemic discrimination against Tamils in their homeland from the majority Sinhalese.

The consul general, who arrived in a black tinted car with two RCMP escorts, was driven to the Brampton restaurant from a meeting in Scarborough, where he met with Immigration minister Jason Kenney's chief of staff, Agop Everklian to discuss last week's apparent fire bombing of a Sri Lankan Sinhalese buddhist temple.

"People here are under threat, Jayasekara said. "It's really about what the Tamil Tigers are up to. They're on the rampage here in Toronto."

Chandrika Tilakaratne, who with her husband opened the restaurant about 16 months ago, said "at this point, I'm scared" but declined to speculate whether or not her restaurant had been intentionally targeted.

"At the moment I can't say anything. I'm leaving the officials to investigate and go from there. I can't suspect anything. I don't know," Tilakaratne said. "How do I feel? Terrible. I feel so sad. This is my second home."

But the consul general wasted no time in blaming the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam - considered a terrorist organization by the Canadian government and 31 other countries - for the fire.

"It's really, really clear. I spoke to the owner at 4.30 in the morning. He called me. He said that earlier, the window panes were broken. They were threatened. People have come here and booed and tooted their horns.

"He said that they broke a window two weeks ago and the people have come here with Tamil Tiger flags.

"As Consul General, they cater my events, so I consider that a threat to Sri Lanka."

A spokesman from Brampton Fire would only say the fire was "suspicious" and that materials collected from the fire were being tested in Toronto to determine if accelerants were used in the blaze.

"At this point, I'm scared. In a city like Brampton, we shouldn't face any of these things. It should be a safe city for everybody." Courtesy: BRETT CLARKSON, SUN MEDIA

Germany: Around 500 Tamils blocked tracks of the 24 platform Frankfort railway station which is a hub of office workers on May 17.

Canada: Sri Lankan Sinhalese are agitated with the attack on the Sri Lankan Buddhist temple in Toronto, Canada. A door of the Buddhist center was completely burnt with this attack. British parliamentarians furious at pro Tamil Tiger rebels demonstrations in London 14-05-2009

Hon MP Mr Gerald Howarth

"Our Capital city has been brought to a standstill by a bunch of demonstrators who have, in effect, occupied Parliament Square” Hon MP for Aldershot, Mr Gerald Howarth angrily told at the House of Commons debate in British Parliament on 11th May 2009. Mr Howarth was supported by many other British Parliamentarians including the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt. Hon Michael Martin.
Speaker MP Martin said “demonstrating is part of a democracy, but no one has ever expected a demonstration to hijack Parliament square and the roads, and thereby stop others performing their democratic duties”. He also promised the House to provide more information regarding this matter, later in the week.
Police said “These demonstrators have taken the British Law into their own hands”. Tamil Tigers are considered as a banned terrorist group by the UK government. However Police further said that they have noticed red flags being flown at the protests bearing the symbol of the Tamil Tigers. This would clearly indicate to British public that the banned terrorist organization is the main force behind these illegal demonstrations. Even though they deny any link with Tamil Tigers, protesters chanted their support for the Tamil Tigers at each and every protest.
At the parliament debate Rt Hon Michael Martin, MP Speaker of the House of Commons, MP Gerald Howarth and Conservative MPs Sir Nicholas Winterton (Macclesfield) and Sir Patrick Cormack (South Staffordshire) spoke against the illegal demonstrations which paralyzed the London City. Meanwhile, Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn (Islington, North) and Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes (North Southwark and Bermondsey) supported the pro Tamil Tiger demonstrators.

Suspected Tamil Tiger mobs repeats attack on Kingsbury Buddhist Temple -London

(Lanka-e-News 14.May.2009 11.30AM) A suspected gang of Tamil Tiger supporters has once again attacked the Sri Saddhatissa International Buddhist Centre (SSIBC) popularly known as “Kingsbury Buddhist Temple-London” in the wee hours of Wednesday (Today) May 14th.

This attack by Tamil Tiger supporters caused damage to the glass windows, panels and the building. No one, including the residing monks, was injured and London Metropolitan Police were called immediately to the temple premises around 3.15 am.

This is the seventh (7th) time Kingsbury temple has come under physical attack and on numerous other occasions, suspects have stolen the Sri Lankan flag which is always displayed on the post in front of the temple, along with the British and Buddhist flags. Previous attacks caused severe damage to the building, glass windows and vehicles parked outside.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in London, Nihal Jayasinghe has vehemently condemned the Wednesday morning attack on the temple. The High Commissioner also called this continuous vandalism a denial of pluralism. He further expressed his displeasure on previous lacklustre investigations carried out by the authorities and their inability to take any action in bringing the culprits to justice.

Multi-faith religious leaders, organisations and peace loving local community leaders strongly condemn this brutal attack and are providing their fullest support to the temple.

There have been many attacks on Buddhist temples, Sri Lankan Sinhalese shops and businesses, innocent Sinhala residents, houses, vehicles as well as London based Sri Lankan community leaders who oppose Tamil Tiger activities in the UK.

Kingsbury Buddhist temple was subjected to an arson attack in January 2009 and all other previous incidents were reported and so far no positive action has been taken by the Police.

A devotee of the temple said that the community is devastated by this incident at a peaceful religious place and expect firm action from the authorities. Whenever Sri Lankan forces capture Tamil Tiger strongholds in quick succession, angry terrorist sympathizers retaliate at soft targets in major cities in the Western world.

In recent times, Tamil Tiger supporters have attacked Sri Lanka High Commission, India High Commission and Chinese Embassy in London and caused much damage. They also beheaded the Sri Nehru statue in front of the India House in London. In Europe they have attacked Sri Lankan embassies in Norway, Netherlands, Paris and also attacked the Paris Buddhist Temple in France.

LTTE extremists attack Sri Lanka embassy in Netherlands

(Lanka-e-news, May 12, 2009, 5.15 pm) A group of LTTE extremists attacked the Sri Lanka embassy in Netherlands last night (11).

The attackers targeted the office of Sri Lanka ambassador Grace Ashirvadan.

The Ambassador said that a group of four LTTE associates attacked her office with beer bottles damaging several window panes and flower vases around 10.30 pm yesterday.

They first attempted to break open the main gate of the embassy. The owner of the next house saw this and informed police. They did the damage and escaped in a car before police arrived as an alarm was ringing, said the ambassador to Lanka-e-News.

Around 12 midnight, a police team arrived and strengthened security. A mobile police team has also been deployed but there was no information about the suspects, said the ambassador.

Ms. Ashirvadan said that she had lodged a complaint before the Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Netherlands denying the incident.

LTTE supporters have so far attacked the Norway, Indian and London embassies and High Commissions of Sri Lanka.

Embassy of Sri Lanka strongly condemns attack against International Buddhist Centre in Paris

(Lanka-e-News 11.May.2009 6.30PM) The Embassy of Sri Lanka vehemently condemns the cowardly attack on the International Buddhist Centre at Le Bourget in Paris by an unidentified group on Sunday the 10th May 2009. This dastardly act took place within hours after the Vesak, the most sacred festival of Buddhists the world over was celebrated at the Buddhist Centre.

The attackers have broken all the front window panes and caused extensive damages to the Centre, which is the main Buddhist temple of the Sri Lankan Buddhist community in France. Although the Police are yet to identify the culprits, the Buddhist monks and community leaders are unanimous in their opinion that the dastardly act was organized by the international network of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a terrorist organization proscribed in the European Union, USA, Canada, India and Sri Lanka.

In recent weeks, there had been several attacks and acts of intimidation against the shops owned by Sri Lankans of Sinhalese origin while several Sinhalese had been victims of physical attacks and it is believed that the attack on the temple is also a part of the LTTE campaign to instigate communal violence and hatred between the Sinhalese and Tamil communities

living in France.

While the Embassy unequivocally condemns the heinous violent act against a place of religious worship, it also urges the French authorities to take effective measures to ensure the safety of the religious centres and commercial establishment of the Sri Lankan community in France.

L'ambassade du Sri Lanka condamne fermement l'attaque contre l'International Buddhist Centre à Paris

(Lanka-e-News 11.May.2009 6.30pm)

The attackers have broken all the front window panes and caused extensive damages to the Centre, which is the main Buddhist temple of the Sri Lankan Buddhist community in France.

Although the Police are yet to identify the culprits, the Buddhist monks and community leaders are unanimous in their opinion that the dastardly act was organized by the international network of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a terrorist organization proscribed in the European Union, USA, Canada, India and Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Embassy in France has unequivocally condemned the heinous violent act against a place of religious worship, and it has also urged the French authorities to take effective measures to ensure the safety of the religious centres and commercial establishment of the Sri Lankan community in France.

Given below the full text of the press release by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Paris on the attack on the International Buddhist Centre, in Paris:

"The Embassy of Sri Lanka vehemently condemns the cowardly attack on the International Buddhist Centre at Le Bourget in Paris by an unidentified group on Sunday the 10th May 2009.

In recent weeks, there had been several attacks and acts of intimidation against the shops owned by Sri Lankans of Sinhalese origin while several Sinhalese had been victims of physical attacks and it is believed that the attack on the temple is also a part of the LTTE campaign to instigate communal violence and hatred between the Sinhalese and Tamil communities living in France.

While the Embassy unequivocally condemns the heinous violent act against a place of religious worship, it also urges the French authorities to take effective measures to ensure the safety of the religious centres and commercial establishment of the Sri Lankan community in France."

Honte à la NORVEGE ! Honte à la NORVEGE

Shame ! NORWAY ! Shame NORWAY !

Shame! NORWAY! Shame NORWAY!

To have to let their best Sri Lankan Tamils terrorist of LTTE friends destroy the embassy of Sri Lanka in Norway. The Norwegian government has just violated the international law on diplomatic protection. The sri lankan ambassador , had even asked on several occasions the Norwegian government a police protection for thus avoiding the violences being able arrived at any moment.

Today, the sri lankan government shows the Norwegian government to have left the sri lankan tamils terrorists to settle in Norway. At the time of this event, the cameras functioned correctly, moreover in this same building, on the 2nd floor the embassy of Kazakhstan had profited from a police protection. What wants to say that 25 terrorists LTTE passed in front of the police officers to reach on the fifth floor and to destroy the embassy of Sri-Lanka.

Until today the Norwegian government stopped one terrorist. Terrorists living in Germany also took part in the destruction of the sri lankan embassy in Norway.

Norway's Moment of Shame
16.04.2009

Sunday's dastardly terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka Embassy in Oslo has demonstrated the ghastly extent of infiltration by LTTE terrorists of the so-called advanced democracies sheltering a gallimaufry of criminal outfits from the four corners of the world. What is really shocking is not so much the terror strike concerned as such but the inexcusable failure on the part of the Norwegian government to apprehend the perpetrators of that inexpiable criminal act, in spite of the availability of damning evidence. Equally baffling and intriguing is the deafening silence the international community is so nonchalantly maintaining on the apathetic and impervious conduct of Norway while frantically campaigning for restoring the rule of law elsewhere.
Norway, which prides itself on its Nobel Peace Prize, must be ashamed of having perverted its law to save a bunch of terrorists and thereby further its political interests. How would it have reacted, had any of its missions abroad come under a terrorist attack and the perpetrators gone scot free? Oslo would have run riot.
In a way, such callous indifference is something to be expected of a nation which has presumptuously chosen to sponsor the LTTE's barbaric terrorism which has claimed tens of thousands of lives in this country. Norway has manifestly become a state sponsoring terrorism!
Norway is not alone in the game of backing Sri Lanka's terrorism, which is thriving in India, Canada, Australia, Britain, France, Germany and the whole of Scandinavia. The question is whether any of these countries would have dared sponsor America's terrorists in that brazen manner. No country told the US to negotiate with the Somali pirates who took a captain of a US ship hostage the other day. The US rescued its citizen with the help of sheer military force – quite rightly so. India did likewise, when Mumbai came under a terrorist attack last November. That is the way terrorism must be tackled.
But, ironically, Sri Lanka's attempt to free its citizens from the clutches of the LTTE terrorists has run into stiff resistance from the very nations crusading against global terrorism! They have ganged up against Sri Lanka and most of them are supporting the LTTE overtly. Is it that battling terrorism is a kind of luxury that small nations cannot afford? One need not be surprised that when those powerful yet duplicitous nations come under terror attacks, their smaller counterparts derive some perverse pleasure.
Those who sleep with dogs, it is popularly said in this country, have to get up with ticks. The same goes for those who sleep with Tigers. The price Norway has had to pay for sharing bed with the murderous Tigers is enormous. It has been reduced to a eunuch nation incapable of taking any action against the terrorists responsible for attacking a foreign mission on her soil. What a shame!
No amount of terrorism against Sir Lankan missions abroad will help Prabhakaran and his fellow terrorists escape. However, Sunday's attack portends trouble for the so-called five star democracies which have become havens for terrorists. Terrorism is slowly but surely eating into their vitals. What Norway is experiencing at present are only symptoms. The worst is yet to come.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government must seriously consider temporarily closing its mission in Oslo until the Norwegian government brings the terrorists who carried out Sunday's attack to book and ensures the safety of its staff.

Luckily, the rocket did not hit us, says Mahela

Sri Lanka cricket team that faced a terrorist attack in Pakistan yesterday (03) arrived in the home country today (04) early morning in a special flight arranged by Sri Lanka.

(Lanka-e-News, March 04, 2009, 11.45 AM)

The Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge that went to take them, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama that came from Nepal to Pakistan and the President Mahinda Rajapakse who cut short the Nepal tour arrived in Sri Lanka in the same flight.

On arrival, addressing media Sri Lanka cricket captain Mahela Jayawardhana said, "First, the wheels of our bus were shot. As they shot at the bus, we crawled under the seats. The driver was shot next but the target missed. He drove the bus forward. Later, we came to know that 12 persons surrounded the bus and fired at it. They fired a rocket as well but it did not hit the target."

Mahela thanked Mehar Mohammed Kaleel, the driver of the bus, for rescuing their lives. "We are indebted to his great courage," he said.

The driver said to foreign media, "I was turning the bus towards the playground at the main roundabout. I saw a rocket was missing the bus and hitting a lamp post. One player shouted 'Go straight' as soon as the firing started. I gathered courage and drove the bus as fast as I could towards the playground keeping my head low. A bomb they threw under the bus exploded after we passed it."

The proposal against Sri Lanka rebuffed by UN Security Council

(Lanka-e-News, May 12, 2009, 4.50 pm)

The majority members of the UN Security Council rebuffed a proposal put forward by Britain, France and Austria yesterday (11) to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka.

Foreign Ministers David Miliband of Britain and Bernard Kouchner of France and Austria's Michael Spindelegger, the federal minister for European and International Affairs briefed the Security Council stating that large numbers of civilians are killed due to fighting between the Army and the LTTE.

The majority of the 15 member Security Council argued that this proposal should not be taken for discussion since there is no threat to international peace.

Although the British Foreign Secretary and the France Foreign Minister were ready to brief the Security Council about what they observed in Sri Lanka, the other members did not allow them to do so. They said they were shocked with this response.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the UN insisted that the parties to the conflict should provided access for international humanitarian services. He has said that the LTTE is acting against the world opinion and the humanitarian actions.

The UN Security Council is comprised of permanent members China, France, Russia, Britain and US. The other non-permanent members are Austria, Japan, Uganda, Burkina Republic, Costa Rica, Croatia, Libya, Mexico, Turkey and Vietnam. The countries like Russia, China, Vietnam, Japan, Libya and Turkey back Sri Lanka at Security Council meetings.

Following the Security Council meeting, the French Foreign Minister said to media that they were shocked at this incident. He said that they could not support Sri Lanka when the people are killed in this way.

The British Foreign Secretary said that it was clear that the issue of Sri Lanka was needed to be discussed in the Security Council. He said that civilians are being killed their in large numbers and they has to talk about it as European countries.

The consent of nine members of the Security Council is needed to insert an emergency proposal to the agenda of the UN Security Council. But the majority of the members objected taking the internal matters of the states for discussion. -Sanjaya Dasanayaka

Tamil Refugee Camp Horror Stories ‘Wrong’ -British MP Bruce

(Lanka-e-News 10.May.2009 1.30PM)

A Team of British Parliamentarians, on an invitation by the Sri Lankan Government, visited the camps for the displaced Tamils who have managed to flee from being held as a 'human shield', and they also visited the perimeters of the no-fire zone. Their comments are being eagerly awaited, and the article below is one of the first: These comments dispel the clamor of 'genocide' and 'starvation' and abuse of these innocent Tamils as claimed by protesting expatriate Tamil-terror supporters all over the world.

Horror stories in Britain about conditions in Sri Lanka camps housing hundreds of thousands of Tamil refugees are wrong, a north-east MP said last night

Gordon Liberal Democrat Malcolm Bruce, chairman of the Commons overseas development committee, said there may be shortages but refugees he spoke to were happy to have escaped the fighting in the north of the island state.

Back from a two-day flying visit, he said his delegation, led by ex-Scottish secretary Des Brown, was the first international group to have reached the war-torn area near Vavuniya, where 123,000 men, women and children are surviving in primitive conditions in government camps.

The delegation faced an angry tirade from President Mahinda Rajapaksa when they arrived in the capital of Colombo asking questions about what had happened.

The president was “aggressively defensive” about the campaign against the rebels, who have conducted a terrorist campaign for decades – including the earliest suicide bombers – in support of the fight for independence.

“The president lost his temper with us and accused us of treating Ceylon like a colony,” said Mr Bruce. “He categorically denied the Sri Lanka army has bombarded civilians and said we had been killing civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan and we should not be lecturing him.”

The mood calmed after the MPs said they had no previous links with Sri Lanka and were not there to support the Tamil rebels but to see what help could be offered coping with the refugees.
Mr Bruce said: “I hope we managed to persuade them they should be more open and allow the international community to do more to assist them, and that keeping aid groups out is allowing the rebels to misrepresent what is going on.”

The group became the first to be allowed access to the camps, where they were able to talk to refugees.

Mr Bruce said: “They were pleased to have reached safety but concerned at shortages of water, sanitation, food and medical supplies.

“Many had been separated from other members of their families and were desperately anxious to find each other and be reunited.

“Many of the people we spoke to said they had not been able to leave the conflict zone because the rebels warned them that if they attempted to escape they would be shot and sentries were posted to prevent escape.”

Shanthi Lekha passes away

(Lanka-e-News, May 11, 2009, 6.25pm)

Popular cinema actress Shanthi Lekha has passed away in France today (11) morning. Shanthi Lekha was 80 years old by the time she passed away.

She was a loving mother to her own children as well as for many young actors and actresses on the screen. It is a fact that Shanthi Lekha has the unbroken record of being cast in the role of mother in many a film during the past decades. She has also acted in more than 350 films since 1952.

Born in Kalutara on July 1, 1929 as Rita Irene Quyn she was later christened as Shanthi Lekha by her first husband Shanthi Viraj. Both of them played the lead roles in " Shantha Prabha", the first stage play of Shanthi Lekha directed by popular composer D.T. Fernando in 1942.

Her parents were reluctant to allow their daughter to take part in stage plays. That was a time when people looked down upon actors and actresses as " Nadagamkarayo".

However, Shanthi Lekha managed to get the permission from her parents to act in " Shantha Prabha" while she was a student at Holy Family Convent in Kalutara.

Although Shanthi Lekha started as an actress, she made the grade as an oriental dancer. She was the dancing girl in stage plays in which Dommie Jayawardena and Nona Subeda played the leading roles.

At the time she started acting in Sinhala films, they were entirely influenced by the South Indian cinema. Both Sinhala and South Indian films were identical except for the differences in language.

It was in "Sandeshaya" that she acted as a mother for the first time, thereafter she became the screen mother or aunt to many popular stars like Gamini Fonseka, Punya Heendeniya and Jeevarani Kurukulasuriya. No other actress has played so many roles as mother like Shanthi Lekha.

Shanthi Lekha is credited with more than 350 films and she has won several awards for her roles. She particularly cherishes her roles in "Uthumaneni", "Eya Den Loku Lamayek", "Amal Biso", "Parithyagaya", "Hithawathiya", "Sasara Chethana" and "Sakvithi Suwaya".

Among the awards she has received are for Best Supporting Actress awards in Gamini Fonseka's "Parasathumal" (Eksath Lanka Rasika Sanvidanaya in 1969) and Mudalinayaka Somaratne's "Binaramali" (Sarasaviya film awards in 1969).

She also won President's Awards in 1979 for her roles in "Mayurige Kathawa" and "Ridi Nimnaya".
