Dialog and Telecom illegally blocks LankaeNews in Sri Lanka

(Lanka-e-News -18.Oct.2011, 6.30P.M.) Two of Sri Lanka's Internet Service Providers – Dialog and Telecom – have illegally blocked Lanka E News to their customers.

The chairman of the Telecommunication Reclamation Commission,(TRC) Anusha Palapita, stated that he has not given such orders to any internet service providers that he was unaware of this incident.

For further clarification we tried to contact the CEO of Dialog, Dr. Hansa Wijesuriya, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

We condemn the illegality of these companies which violate the peoples' right to access truthful information. We also ask those who stand up for media freedom to stand against this illegal act.

Over the past week the president has spoken against web-media during two occasions. At one occasion he said that these “insults” are written by journalists who live in Sri Lanka and then uploaded from America and that it is a conspiracy.

The Dialog company is the main service provider for the defence ministry and Telecom is a semi-government company. The chairman of Telecom is a brother of one of the government ministers'.

EU Heads concern the recent blocking of news websites in Sri Lank

(Lanka-e-News -08.Nov.2011, 5.45PM) EU Heads of Mission in Colombo view with concern the recent blocking of various news websites in Sri Lanka.

The EU considers that freedom of press forms an integral part of any democratic system. The EU therefore believes that the media should be allowed to operate independently.

The EU also believes that citizens have the right to access all information provided by the media and to make their own judgements and to formulate opinions independently.

The EU Heads of Mission call on the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure that the rights of the free media are respected.

Website owners seek legal action : Will regime scoundrels have even a stinking drain to hide themselves when their dismal end comes?

(Lanka-e-News -08.Nov.2011, 7.30PM) The owners of websites and Editors are gearing to file legal suits against the imposing of illegal bans on websites . It is also reported that media Organizations are also getting ready to file another case against the ban . The ban is clearly illegal as it is an absolute denial of media rights and the right to information of the public, and therefore constituting a violation of fundamental rights.

According to the official notification of the Director General of Govt. news , there had supposedly been a number of complaints to the media and information Ministry from individuals about character assassinations and defamation in the websites .

Is the Ministry so ignorant or abounding with buffoons as not to know that it is not the judicial Court to make a determination on those complaints. If there is a grouse against the website, the complaint can be lodged with the Press Complaints Commission , and if there is no response , court action can be had recourse to. While all these legal avenues are open , the Media Secretary (well noted for his nefarious activities published in this website many a time ),using others’ names of those under him ,and under various guises seeking to take the law into his hands is unpardonable not to mention intolerable. This media Secretary who is smarting under the sordid exposures of him made in our earlier articles, must first rectify his own weaknesses which are denting not only his reputation , but also that of the Minister and the Ministry. This Secretary must first clear his own stinking garbage bin before he digs those of others. He must change his character from wizened old ‘father in love’ (showing love to young daughters of others) to a true Secretary in love for his job for which he is appointed without smearing the names of the Minister and the Ministry. It is learnt that this Secretary has cowardly compelled a Professor , the news Director to officially send out a notice according to his fanciful needs .

Interestingly , the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) Chairman , Hudson Samarasinghe from dusk to dawn without pausing for a moment is delivering long discourses on media virtues and safeguards . Where were the Hudsons , mudsons and soil’s sons when the website was burnt down? Where were these so called champions of media freedom hiding when media personnel were being murdered , jailed and were caused to disappear?

On top of all these atrocities and hypocrisies , the worst joke perpetrated by the regime and its
clowns is the instructions issued by them that all websites within and without Sri Lanka (SL) posting news on SL people shall be registered immediately with the media and information Ministry. This means that no media in the world can publish Sri lanka news. In other words , websites publishing SL tourism information, as well as google map and Wikipedia websites which post Lanka news must also register with the SL media and information Ministry , based on this notice. Of course , it was long before known that lunatics and fanatics abound in the media Ministry , but now after this notice was published , it is confirmed that the entire lunatic asylum and its inmates are housed in this Ministry.

It is very evident that the news director who is seeking to publish the truth and factual situation in the country is himself in a quagmire ( due to undue pressure exerted by ‘father in love’ Secretary) because of the profusion of lies the regime is turning out every minute of the day . In order to camouflage a lie when it is exposed , a hundred lies are produced by the Regime’s lie factory, and so forth. This has created an eternal vicious cycle of lie multiplication .Consequently , the media and information Ministry is drowned in a Tsunami of lies and deceptions with the regime rudderless and aimless now drifting in all directions in an uncharted sea , desperately struggling to save itself from the inevitable end- sinking to the deepest depths . At least Gadaffi of Libya found a drain to hide before he was caught and killed like a dog. Whether the regime’s chief of Lanka and his sidekicks will be left with even a stinking drain to hide in the circumstances, is however in doubt .

Website ban further broadened on News Director General notification

(Lanka-e-News -05.Nov.2011, 11.30PM) Dr. Ariyaratne Athugala, the Director General of Govt. news unit has issued a notice under his signature that all websites within Sri Lanka, or those outside publishing news on Sri Lanka (SL) shall be registered immediately with the media and information Ministry . Meanwhile the Lanka e news website has also been further blocked by pressures brought to bear on the other remaining international service providers of SL to impose prohibitions.

In addition , simultaneously with this action , the websites , Sri Lanka Mirror and Lanka way news Lanka gurdian have also been
obstructed. The news communiqué issued by the Director General of Govt. News appended herein only further confirms the dictatorial direction in which this Rajapakse regime is openly and despotically speeding , or rather hurtling down.

The Ministry of Mass Media and Information has been receiving many complaints from various individuals who have been subjected to defamation and character assassination by certain reports published in several websites. These websites in question are continuing to publish defamatory and damaging reports aiming at selected individuals. Some of the reports directly violate the privacy of those individuals. The content of certain reports found on the web sites are injurious to the image of country, Head of the state, Ministers, senior public officials, VVIP who have been targeted in this deliberate character assassination campaign. In the above circumstances, a survey was conducted by this Ministry and it has been revealed that certain reports published in several websites have been noted as allegedly committing such as wrongful acts violating the laws of the country.

The ministry believes that those who are operating and maintaining these clandestine websites have been doing so to discredit the government, Head of the state and others concerned with malicious intent. Journalists/Editors/Owners of these websites seem to disregard the ethics of journalism, right of individual privacy and security of those who have been targeted. If the content of a publication on a web site is deemed to be a potential violation of the privacy of an individual such publication positively goes against the accepted norms and normal ethics of a responsible media practice. Such slanderous publications should not only be discouraged but also acts of this nature would have to be effectively prevented in the interest of general public.

In view of the above, The Ministry of Mass Media and Information intends to request all news casting websites to maintain accepted ethical standards of Mass media and conform to the laws of the country in producing and publishing the content of their websites which are uploaded from Sri Lanka or elsewhere. Such websites carrying any content relating to Sri Lanka or the people of Sri Lanka are also requested to communicate with the Ministry of Mass Media and Information and register their accreditation at their earliest.

U.S. Embassy Deeply Concerned About Lanka-e-News Blockade

The United States Embassy in Colombo is deeply concerned that the Internet news site Lanka-e-News has been blocked in Sri Lanka. While the Embassy does not endorse the views of any particular media outlet, the United States believes that a free and independent media is vital to ensuring the health and continuation of any democracy. Freedom of expression, including unfettered access to Internet news websites, is a basic right which must be respected. We therefore call on the Sri Lankan authorities and the managements of Sri Lankan telecommunications firms to stop activities aimed at blocking free access in Sri Lanka to all legitimate media websites, including Lanka-e-News. No justice is being done to Bharatha by regime: A face book page ‘justice for Bharatha’ opened therefore

M) Following the dispatching abroad of murderer Duminda Silva M P by the Rajapakse regime ,who is directly responsible for the death of Bharatha Lakshman in the quadruple murder , grave doubts have sprung up among all as to whether investigations into the ghastly murders will be conducted by the regime duly.

Late Bharatha Lakshman ‘s daughter and a group have opened a page in the face book titled ‘justice for Bharatha’to ensure proper investigations are duly conducted and the culprits brought to book.. The main aim of this action is to help those , dependents, kith and kin of those four victims who were killed in the Bharatha murder who have been rendered destitute. Hirunika Premachandra , the daughter of Late Bharatha had urged those who wish to help to enter the face book page ‘justice for Bharatha’
Meanwhile , at the post mortem or inquiry held on the 1st on the Mulleriyawa murders, the Driver of Bharahtha identified one of the suspects. Hirunika Premachandra said, though the Magistrate had a right to go to the Hospital and obtain a statement from Duminda Silva the prime suspect in this quadruple murder , no such measures had been taken.
