Former Chief Justice Sarath N Silva has apologised for the ruling he gave in support of then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2005 the ‘Helping Hambantota’ case.
Silva has told the BBC Sinhala service that he had given the ruling in the case based on the evidence before him and felt he had ensured justice.


The court order ensured Rajapaksa could contest the 2005 Presidential elections which he eventually won and was appointed President, a post which he holds onto even today.
The then Chief Justice says President Rajapaksa has now become a different person and under him, his Government is involved in several corrupt deals.


Sarath N. Silva says by looking at how the President and his Government are operating now there is suspicion if the allegations raised in the ‘Helping Hambantota’ case were actually true.
In the high profile case, allegations were raised over certain donations received in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami which struck Sri Lanka seriously affecting the coastal area, in particular the Hambantota District, represented by Rajapaksa.


Rajapaksa was accused of misappropriating tsunami funds by depositing them in an account in a private bank. Sarath N. Silva had however ruled that the allegations were false. (Colombo Gazette)
