The floating armory not regulated internationally a threat to India : Indian Navy commander hints at Gota’s armory

Joshi&Gotha_LeN_09.12.2013

(Lanka-e-News- 09.Dec.2013, 10.00PM) The Indian Navy Commander Admiral D. K. Joshi had said , the armory located outside the legal territorial limits of Sri Lanka purportedly to ward off sea pirates and in the Indian sea territory is a threat to the security of India. He made this revelation to the Times of India newspaper.

The International Maritime Organization ( I M O) should introduce a regulating mechanism in regard to this armory , otherwise this is a serious unlawful operation in the Indian ocean , and is posing grave threats to the Indian security , Joshi added.

Recently , a shipping craft ‘MV Seaman Guard Ohio’ was taken into custody. In it there were 25 armed security personnel of 4 nationalities. They were taking a load of weapons and bullets unlawfully to Tuticorin . They belong to a private Co. which is providing security to commercial ships of sea pirates. There are a number of such companies operating in the Indian sea territory. In them there are also personal security details. They climb on to ships and climb down claiming that they are providing security to vessels which is part of their duty. Yet they do not state which country their vessels belong; no are there reports. This state of clandestine operations provide the best environment conducive to a terrorist who wants to cause a bomb attack.

How many of such vessels are there in this special security zone? What are the weapons that are there ? How many security soldiers are there ? In this connection an international regulatory mechanism must be put in place. Following the sinking of 4 parent ships of pirates in the vicinity of the Lakshadveepaya sea and Minicoy islands, within 450 nautical miles of the Indian territorial sea , there had been no piracy attacks for the last two years.

Hence this controversial floating armory is unnecessary, Indian Navy Commander had pinpointed. The latter who visited SL last month had echoed the same view when he was here too.

It is to be noted that it is the SL defense secretary who is the main person who is responsible for the maintenance of the floating armory off the seas of Galle citing the ground it is to safeguard commercial vessels from pirates of Somalia. It is noteworthy that this is run by a private security company belonging to the SL defense secretary.

Though Gotabaya is a defense secretary and a government servant and he cannot legally run such companies , yet since he belongs to the country’s ruling (rather country’s routing) Rajapakse family who think they are above the law , this defense secretary is running multiple private security firms under his security Organization illegally .

It was revealed in the British Parliament recently , that a British Co. had sold arms to this floating armory. Previously ,the United Arab emirates government impounded a ship loaded with arms headed for SL , but after the intervention of the SL Navy , the ship was released after the SL Navy claimed that they were consigned to SL . Intriguingly however this consignment of weapons never arrived in SL.

In truth this consignment of weapons were headed for Gotabaya’s floating armory. There is no report at all on the quantity of these weapons; out of whose funds? ; what are the weapons; what are they for? If a private Co. has imported them the details should be made known to the government. That procedure had also not been followed. It has also not been probed why a private Co. is in need of such a large consignment of weapons?

During the period of the LTTE terrorism , their main business apart from heroin was arms deals. At that time they imported 5000 tons of TNT explosives though that amount was not used during the war. After the war concluded too, that large amount of explosives was not retrieved which implies that the LTTE had sold the TNT to another terrorist organization. SL in fact received assistance internationally to crush the LTTE based on the grounds that the LTTE is not a rebel organization , and it is an organization that is a threat to the security of the entire zone .

Now the LTTE no longer exists . Yet there are demands for illicit arms. In India alone there are 35 terrorist organizations which are proscribed. Though the LTTE is not there its illicit arms dealing father is still there . His name is K.P. who is under the care ,protection and affection of Gotabaya . Even the wife of LTTE sea tiger leader Soosai who knows all the secrets is with Gotabaya . In addition Gotabaya had met with another LTTE leader in Italy and had discussions . The same defense secretary Gotabaya also has a floating armory and it is this armory that had received consignments of illicit arms from many countries without any records.

Don’t all the above data and details prove that SL defense secretary certainly has a very proud record to boast of ?

Gota’s secret meeting with LTTE leader lead to a matter of security to the United States Namal warns his father about the Gota’s secret deal

(Lanka-e-news-08.Dec.2013, 10.45 P.M.)Lanka e news learned that the American Intelligence Service has requested a report from Italian Intelligence about Gotabhaya Rajapakse for his meeting with a leader of the LTTE recently, as it is a banned terrorist organization in the United States.

The LTTE leader whom Gota met in his Italian visit is a well known wanted terrorist by the International Intelligence Services and is absconding their security network.

The LTTE terrorist group in the latter part of the war negotiated many deals in Europe for their weapon supplies through this terrorist leader. The well known terrorist leader “K.P” has only provided money necessary to weapon purchases. This terrorist visited many countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Cambodia and Vietnam and made a number weapon deals. He has amazing languages skills and speaks many languages. There is much information received about his illegal activities but unable to disclose as this matter is now under investigation.

The United States is deeply concerned about Gotabhaya Rajapakse being a United States Citizen dealing with terrorists such as the one well known to the intelligence in violation of their laws. LTTE is a listed terrorist group in the United States. Making deals with the LTTE terrorist group inside or outside of Sri Lanka is subject to their investigations. There is no credible report that Gotbhaya has renounced his United States citizenship according to the IRS( Internal Revenue Service). Every United States citizen must file tax returns with the IRS. Unless one informs the IRS for renunciation of citizenship. IRS under the regulation discloses to the public of such names periodically. Further renunciation of citizenship is a matter to the United States Department of State and there is no such information available to the public.

Gotabhaya Rajapakse may be holding an office as Secretary of Defense in Sri Lanka but he is not a law enforcement officer, therefore his dealing with terrorists are prohibited and only probable cause is required to make a case under the existing laws. Further no government can give permission to Gota to deal with Terrorists as the United States prohibits any dealing with terrorists. For this reason his activities specifically dealing with LTTE terrorists is a matter to the United States and such dealings are matters to be investigated by the US Intelligence. Further at the time Gota became the Secretary of Defense, he was a United States Citizen and then validity of Sri Lankan citizenship (if he has one) is a matter to be challenged in the United States. He may be immune from the Sri Lankan judicial system but not from the United States as he was a United States citizen and at the time he obtained citizenship he took an oath to abide the laws of the United States. Under these circumstances it is unavoidable to the United States Intelligence to question him whether he has violated the United States laws. Therefore the Intelligence is arguing that the report from the Italian Intelligence is essential for investigation purposes.

In the mean time Gota’s secret dealings with LTTE created paranoia in the Rajapakse regime. Gota’s secret mission with LTTE leader was not known and not informed to the President brother. Gota has a secret agenda that did not inform about the dealing with LTTE leader after he returned to Sri Lanka. Namal has shown the E-news report to his father as it was the first report that reveals Gota’s secret mission. He has told his father that “ father at least now open your eyes about your own brothers, I told you that they are waiting to empower you”. It is a well known fact that Namal has a feeling of resentment towards his uncles Gotabhaya Rajapakse and Basil Rajapakse.

Gota’s hush hush discussions with LTTE leader in Italy sparks serious local and international repercussions

(Lanka-e-News- 09.Dec.2013, 10.00PM) It is learnt that the US security division had called for a report from the Italian intelligence division regarding the SL defense secretary’s tour of Italy and his clandestine meeting with a front line LTTE leader while he was in Italy. This LTTE leader is most wanted by the countries which are opposed to international terrorism, and they have been on the trail of this most wanted LTTE leader .

This LTTE leader who Gotabaya met most secretly was the individual who had been transacting arms deals in Europe during the last phase of the war , and K .P .the other LTTE leader had only been providing the funds for these arms supplies to the LTTE . This LTTE leader who had secret talks with SL defense secretary has been traveling to Ukraine, Russia , Cambodia, Vietnam and other countries to transact arms purchases. He was unimaginably extremely conversant in a number of languages. Though there is a wealth of information in regard to this LTTE leader , those cannot be revealed just yet as they can impair security interests.
The meeting between Gotabaya and such a terrorist leader with such a putrid antecedence while countries opposed to terrorism are mounting a strong campaign against it , has become a matter of grave concern to America specially because SL’s criminal defense secretary Gotabaya is an American citizen. If Gotabaya has relinquished his American citizenship , he will be classified under the I .R .S list ( Internal Revenue Service) and should be notified to the State department. Since he has not done that yet , he is still an American citizen. Hence, under the US laws , except an officer of the legal division who is eligible to discuss with a terrorist concerning legal issues , an American citizen cannot hold discussions with a terrorist leader . Gotabaya Rajapakse is only a secretary of the SL defense Ministry and not a legal officer . In the circumstances , Gotabaya’s secret discussions with a terrorist leader is construed as posing serious threats to America .

America has every eligibility to interrogate Gotabaya , and therefore the US intelligence division had inquired from the Italian intelligence division with a view to garnering information in this connection.

Meanwhile Gotabya’s secret discussions had triggered a crisis within the Rajapakse regime. His brother Mahinda Rajapakse , though he is the President had not been aware of this. Even after the discussions , Gotabaya had not revealed it . It is only after Namal Rajapakse learning of all the details through the Lanka e news website exposures ,Namal had shown the report to Mahinda Rajapakse and pointed out ‘Thattha (father) , at least now try to understand what I complain every day about the Baappas (father’s younger brothers ) . They are trying to stab you in the back.’ It is a well and widely known truth that Namal Rajapakse had been over a long period of time harboring suspicions in respect of his Baappas ( or sarapayas ?), Gotabaya and Basil Rajapakse.

4000 Diplomatic passports issued to astrologers, murderers and hair plucking eunuchs of VIP’s wives

(Lanka-e-News-07.Dec.2013, 10.30PM) Following the Medamulana backwoods land crocodiles taking cruel and barbaric control of the country , there has emerged another rudely startling report of their indiscriminate destruction of traditions , procedures and assets of valuable Institutions.

The Medamulana backwoods land crocodiles have by now issued over 4000 Diplomatic passports (with Diplomatic immunity ) according to reports reaching Lanka e news , which large number even India , a very much bigger country has not issued !

A Diplomatic passport is issued to the President , Prime Minister , Cabinet Ministers , Governors, former Presidents and Prime Ministers , chief justice, supreme court judges, opposition leader, speaker ,attorney general, Central Bank governor , Auditor general and those in the foreign diplomatic service of the country only. Others in the high rungs of the government are issued only official passports .

In SL , the entitlement to a diplomatic passport falls into 27 categories . Among them , mayors , Sangha nayakes and Ministry secretaries also are entitled.

Though these are the regulations governing the issue of diplomatic passports , under the Medamulana backwoods land crocodiles’ reign , sons , daughters , boy friends , girl friends , spouses and paramours of President’s secretary , advisors , their wives’ hair plucking eunuchs and astrologers have been issued passports with diplomatic immunity and are among these lucky 4000 diplomatic passport holders.

Based on reports , Galagoda Aththe Gnanassara the drunkard of Bebedu Sena (BBS) and Delft pradeshiya sabha chairman the EPDP criminal who was arrested for murder recently had also been issued with these Diplomatic passports .Going by this indiscriminate distribution of passports, Julampitiya Amare too the underworld criminal being issued with a diplomatic passport is not a matter for surprise.

According to Universal practice , diplomatic immunity does not attach just because one is a holder of a diplomatic passport, the immunity attaches only to a Diplomat with excellent credentials. In the circumstances, there is no doubt that very soon a Diplomatic passport of SL will be treated like a piece of paper internationally at this rate.

In SL only those with the qualifications mentioned hereunder who can officially be entitled to a Diplomatic passport.

Chinese Influence in Sri Lanka and CHOGM

MR_China_Tour_2013May_LeN_04.11.2013

(Lanka-e-News-04.Nov.2013, 5.30PM) Since beginning of the Rajapaksa regime, China expanded its role in Sri Lanka as a major donor, arms provider, trading partner and investor as well as protector of the regime in the international arena. China did not suddenly entered Sri Lanka but she developed a very strong relationship with Mahinda Rajapaksha even before he became the President. As a result, China heavily financed the election campaign of Mahinda Rajapksha. At the same time, through Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon Taiwan also financed the election campaign of Mahinda Rajapaksha. Millions of dollars given by Taiwan were not used for the first election campaign as he was not sure of his victory.

The intention of China was not only to have a satellite state in the door step of India but also to develop Sri Lanka’s sea port and airport facilities to be used in the future when a need arises. As Mahinda Rajapaksa had developed hatred towards India, China was very happy to be his side to use Rajapaksa regime against India. Today, China is behaving not as a friend of Sri Lanka but as a master who controls every aspect of the country. During the opening of the Colombo port and Katunayake-Colombo expressway, China unveiled its true face as a master prohibiting to display the Sri Lankan flag at the ceremonies. It is also worthwhile to note that Mahinda Rajapaksa visited China 07 times after becoming the President. This is very unusual as no leader in the world has visited China very frequently than Mahinda Rajapaksa. More importantly, treatment given to Mahinda Rajapaksa during each of his visits defers and towards the last visits he was not even given an audience of the top leaders of China. Evidently, China has very effectively used the greed of the Rajapsksa family according to its own agenda to protect and promote its interests in the Indian Ocean.

Chinese influence is heavily felt especially in Sri Lanka’s relations with other countries and defense related matters. It is a known secret that a specially hacking unit consisting of Chinese military personnel is working at the Sri Lanka Ministry of Defense. Their duties include hacking of telephones and computers of Sri Lanka opposition politicians, foreign Diplomatic Missions in Colombo and monitoring of Indian and US activities in the region. In addition, China is grooming Sri Lankan military personnel providing them with scholarships, monthly allowances and frequent foreign trips. Sri Lankan Navy Commander Jayanath Colombage is one of them. China is controlling him through his Chinese girlfriend and providing him with money. Similarly, Chief of National Intelligence of Sri Lanka Gen. Kapila Hendawiatharana and a number of intelligence officers in the army Intelligence unit are under Chinese payroll. Sri Lanka has offered China a land in Colombo 07 close to Chinese Embassy to establish a Chinese cultural center. The real aim of this center is to establish a fully equipped surveillance center to monitor India and activities of other nations in the Indian Ocean.

The Chinese influence is heavy in the Sri Lankan Ministry of external Affairs too. Secretary of the Ministry, Karunathilake Amunugama got his post as a result of constant pressure from the former Chinese Ambassador in Colombo. Amunugama is more loyal to China than Chinese Communist party comrades. He is frequently consulting the Chinese Ambassador in Sri Lanka and Chinese government on various issues related to Sri Lanka’s relations with other countries. Similar situation was prevailing long time ago in the Ministry of external Affairs during the periods of JR, Premadasa and Chandrika. During these periods, some officials in the Ministry get the speeches of the Sri Lanka President and the Foreign Minister corrected by the then Indian envoys in Colombo.

Karunathilake Amunugama has been frequently sending all classified documents, speeches and arrangements of CHOGM to the Chinese Embassy in Colombo. It was revealed through internal sources that China has already indicated some points to be included in the main CHOGM speech of the President of Sri Lanka. External Affairs Minister, G.L. Peiris is also under pressure from China on CHOGM matters. Not surprisingly, India has been able to obtain classified documents related to CHOGM through the present Sri Lanka High Commissioner in India. Of course he is very close friend of Kshenuka Senavirathna. Amunugama and Kshenuka are arch enemies.

Karunathilake Amunugama appointed Majintha Jayasinghe as the Chief of Protocol at a request of Colombo Chinese Ambassador. Majintha Jayasinghe underwent Chinese language training in Beijing under a Chinese government scholarship. He served in Sri Lanka Missions in China two times. He also has a Chinese girlfriend, who is a spy. Presently, she is in Sri Lanka and she is frequently meeting Majintha Jayasinghe. According to the Ministry of External Affairs sources, through Majintha Jayasinghe Chinese government has been able to obtain flight details of CHOGM leaders as well as information about other delegations visiting Colombo. Now CHOGM meeting has also become an event of the Chinese government as many officials from China have visited Colombo to monitor the conference and help the Sri Lankan government. This is a dangerous phenomenon as India is closely monitoring Sri Lanka. She has the ability to break Sri Lanka at any time as she did in the past through the LTTE.

In the history of Sri Lanka, the country has never been so dangerously controlled by a foreign nation than today. This is a pathetic situation. People of Sri Lanka and some sections of the international community are responsible for protecting the Rajapaksas, who are short sighted politicians with personal agenda. It is similar to the way the USA was protecting most corrupted leaders in the Middle East. Despite unprecedented support from the USA and the West, today, the forces of Arab Spring have been able to depose most of these corrupted leaders. As Sri Lankans are slavishly worshipping even the under wears and dogs of Rajapskes, a “Colombo Spring” cannot be expected very soon. However, surely Sri Lankans will suffer a long period under this regime mainly because of their approval of massacre of thousands of Tamils in the north in the name of countering terrorism. This is KARMA. True Sri Lankans salute the international media for exposing atrocities of Rajapaksa regime when local media has become slaves of the regime and enemies of the country.

Gota has met another LTTE leader in Italy on the sly-caught red handed by Italian secret service

(Lanka-e-News- 04.Dec.2013, 8.30PM) The Italian Intelligence service had revealed that Sri Lanka (SL) criminal defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse on his recent tour of Italy has met a prominent LTTE cadre recognized still as an international terrorist.

The Italian State intelligence service which launched on an anti terrorist campaign D. I. G. O. S. conducted an operation to arrest 35 LTTE terrorist frontline leaders at one time on 17 th June 2008 . On that day 33 LTTE leaders were arrested at various places , while two others made good their escape. Later one of the LTTE escapees had surrendered but the other LTTE leader had not so far been apprehended.

The notorious criminal defense secretary Gotabaya well noted for illicit deals and establishing illicit connections with terrorists and arms dealers had on his Italian tour somehow met the LTTE leader who the Italian intelligence service could not arrest. The Italian intelligence service had received information confirming this meeting .

The LTTE leader who was absconding the Italian intelligence service had arrived at the hotel where the SL criminal defense secretary was staying and met with him. However what transpired or what transactions took place between them is still not known. CCTV cameras however have confirmed the meeting between Gotabaya the criminal defense secretary and the criminal LTTE leader who is evading arrest.

One of the parties to the Euros in millions account belonging to a group of three LTTE leaders is this LTTE leader who met Gota . As the three of them had got separated , and since the SL security division has got information on this , not one has so far come to the open to make claims .

It has also been confirmed that two secret teams of Banks in St. Marino have also met Gotabaya at the Hotel where he stayed.

It is a cruel irony that while the Italian government is still considering LTTE as an internationally proscribed organization , the SL government is getting down LTTE leaders into this country and giving protection secretly , not to mention having clandestine discussions and transactions with those leaders abroad . This is a clear index that the SL government is supporting and stoking international terrorism , the Italian intelligence service sources pointed out.

In the circumstances , the Italian intelligence services is getting ready to take action through the diplomatic channels

Gota’s secret Italian tour is an absolute lie: No meeting with Pope nor did Italy’s defense Ministry give appointment- it is all ‘black money’ craze

(Lanka-e-News- 28.Nov.2013, 11.55PM) It has come to light that the Rajapakse regime’s announcement regarding SL defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse’s tour of Italy is an absolute lie , as he has in fact gone to Italy to open a secret account to deposit his ‘black monies,’ according to reports based on Lanka e news foreign service.

Following the Lanka e news report on Gotabaya’s Italian tour ,the regime desperately explained that he went to Italy as a special representative of the President to meet and invite Rev. Pope Francis to visit Sri Lanka.

The true picture is Gotabaya had gone to Italy to transfer his black money to a secret account in Italy , and hence the regime’s explanation is to camouflage the truth.

The reason corroborating this true picture is:

There is a procedure and custom to be followed when a country wishes to invite the Vatican Pope. That is, either the country’s leading Christian clergy council including the Cardinal should decide to extend an invitation , or the country’s Diplomatic mission High commissioner should abiding by the protocol invite him. Both these procedures have not been followed.

At least Gotabaya who claimed he is the President’s representative should have obtained an official appointment from the council of the Vatican Pope, which too had not been done.

Gotabaya had met the Pope on a Wednesday when the ordinary public could see him following a queue, in which event he can only hand over his gift basket , but cannot meet with the Pope.

Intriguingly , even the SL ambassador there , Bennet Cooray had not accompanied Gota to meet the Pope. Though efforts were made to meet the Pope through a Father there named Nevil, the latter had been unable to help Gota. Finally , the father Nevil had not even gone to the Vatican city with Gotabaya.

To invite the Pope , at least a Cabinet Christian Minister who is a government lackey ought to have been sent instead of Gotabaya ,a Buddhist . Besides , Gotabaya is a notorious government servant and a sinner tainted with war crime charges who is not at all suitable to do that errand of the President. Indeed such an individual being sent to invite the Pope is tantamount to insulting the Pope if not trying to make the Pope also a sinner.

In the official publication of the Vatican ‘Osarvathore Romano’, the special representatives of countries who met the Pope are revealed along with their photographs, but in the case of Gotabaya , though it was announced that he was a special guest of the Pope on the 20 th of November , in the ‘Osarvathore Romano’ of last week , nothing at all was revealed about this meeting or the invitation. This is because Gotabaya had met the Pope in the same way as any other ordinary citizen .

The group of SL media coolies who stoop to anything for filthy lucre and selfish gains had of course reported that Gotabaya’s invitation was accepted by Pope and he will visit SL in the first month of next year which is just a fabrication , for when Lanka e news inquired from the Pope’s media division they stated nothing of that sort had been finalized so far.

Meanwhile a request made by Gotabaya to the internal security Minister , Italy for a meeting had been rejected , explaining that if the request has originated from the SL Defense Minister or its Deputy Minister , that could be considered , and they have no necessity to meet the defense secretary.

In this connection , a spokesman for Italy’s internal defense Ministry speaking to Lanka e news at length explained, in 2008 when SL was informed to lodge complaints against the LTTE with the Institution in Germany that classifies world terrorist organizations , and the A .I.A. the international court for war located in Netherland as war crime charges are likely to be mounted against SL, the latter paid no heed.. ‘Hence the defense secretary meeting us now is of no avail as it is too late,’ he noted.

In July 2009 , a group of representatives of the internal security Ministry arrived in SL to apprise the latter of this , ‘but our Ministry’s advice was disregarded by SL ,’ he added.

Moreover , now the SL government is allied with sections of the LTTE terrorists and are carrying on activities with them . Don’t these actions of the government jeopardize the lives and interests of those groups who opposed the LTTE at that time? he questioned. We know very well the purpose of Gotabaya’s tour of Italy , he told with a smile. The SL defense secretary’s whole gaze was fixed on St. Marino for obvious reasons , he quipped.

Rajapakse ‘spy’ to leave SL secretly with CHOGM delegates after summit

(Lanka-e-News-08.Nov.2013, 11.00PM) The Medamulana Rajapakse regime had prepared a novel method to make sure that after the Commonwealth heads of government summit meeting , when the special delegates are leaving , along with them on the sly to send one of its acolytes to a European country , according to reports reaching Lanka e news inside information division.

It is planned that this special acolyte who is saddled with a number of responsibilities during the summit , leaves for the European country as soon as the summit is over . This specially picked individual will be arriving in the European country on the 19 th though he has no invitation from that country. His tour is organized in such a way that it is a secret to both Sri Lanka and the foreign country.

As this special individual has had no dealings with that European country , this tour is extraordinarily important and secretive,.

Like the foreign information services , Lanka e news too is scrupulously watching and trailing this mysterious individual. Lanka e news hopes to reveal all details of this individual’s secretive plans and pursuits shortly.

‘Rajapakse we know who you are’ ; ‘we know what your security divisions are doing too’- huge demonstrations in London

(Lanka-e-News-04.Nov.2013, 4.30PM) ‘Rajapakse we know who you are’, ‘we know what your security divisions are doing too.’

‘Why is the leadership at the Commonwealth summit being given to Mahinda Rajapakse after knowing truly and thoroughly the outrageous human rights violations committed within Sri Lanka ?’

These were the slogans used by protestors when a massive demonstration was staged in England this evening by the youth division of the Amnesty international Organization .

About 300 human rights activists who converged on the park in front of the British Parliament in London demonstrated against British Prime Minister Cameron and foreign Minister Hague visiting Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth heads of Government summit.

The pictures herein depict the several demonstrations stag

Developing trend is dangerous: Killing of a person in custody is a heinous crime: Standing Committee of the BASL on Rule of Law
(Lanka-e-News-05.Dec.2013, 10.30PM) The explanation given by the police regarding the death of three suspects who were under police custody arrested in connection with the killing of a police officer and his wife at Kamburupitiya, is unacceptable and the whole incident smells of another case of extra judicial killing.

The explanation that the 1st suspect arrested was killed by police firing when the suspect (was hand cuffed) tried to pick up a weapon to shoot at the police officer, when the suspect was taken to recover the weapons used in the crime and the explanation given regarding the deaths of the two suspects attested few days later that the suspects have fled from police custody (hand cuffed), and jumped into the Denagama tank is hilarious. The circumstances surrounding the death of these suspects need investigation by a special commission.

Any person accused of committing criminal acts has a right to be tried according to law. The police cannot be allowed to try and punish persons accused of crimes however serious they may be. This will amount to usurpation of judicial power by the police and the persons responsible has to be dealt with under the law of the country.

This is not an isolated incident. It is seen that during the last few years large number of such incidents of death of persons in police custody has been reported and the explanation by the police in all such cases has been identical.

The killing of a person in state custody is a heinous crime as the state is said to be the guardian of its citizens and it is considered that state custody is the safest custody.

Blatant violations of fundamental rights guaranteed under the constitution has to be condemned and the government owes a duty, if it respects rule of law, protection of human rights and democratic values to take immediate steps to appoint a judicial commission and clear the doubts that the people have for very valid reasons. If not it will have a serious infact on the image of the country in respect for rule of law and human rights.

The developing trend is dangerous no one can lay down limits to such actions and it may be not long before even opponents of the establishment will be dealt with summorarily in this manner.

These incidents have created a doubt on the efficacy of the law enforcement establishment to deal with crimes of this nature and the will of the government to protect human rights of its citizens.

IFJ Condemns the Detention of Asia-Pacific Directors

Stop_the_War_Against_SL_LeN_01.11.2013

(Lanka-e-News-01.Nov.2013, 3.30PM) The International Federation of Journalists condemns the detention of Asia-Pacific Director Jacqui Park and Asia-Pacific Deputy Director Jane Worthington in Sri Lanka. The two have recently been allowed to leave after being detained without charge since Wednesday October 30.

Ms Park and Ms Worthington were detained at a press freedom meeting in Colombo on Wednesday and were held in their hotel and subjected to lengthy interrogation by defence and immigration officials and the Criminal Investigation Department all Thursday.

They were taken from the meeting to their hotel against their wishes. Their passports were confiscated and they were not allowed to leave to board their planned flight at 2.45pm on October 31. A device was inserted into Ms Park's laptop and interrogating officers appeared to download files.

They have not been charged with any crime and cooperated fully with authorities at every stage of the lengthy questioning process. They have not been physically harmed.

Media reports have suggested the Sri Lankan government was alleging Ms Park and Ms Worthington had conducted journalistic activities without obtaining media accreditation.

According to the Sri Lankan Government-operated Electronic Travel Authorisation system website, attending workshops is not prohibited under the conditions of the Sri Lankan tourist visa. The IFJ is adamant that no breaches of visa conditions have occurred.

AFP and local media have reported that Ms Park and Ms Worthington were accused by Sri Lankan Minister of Mass Media and Information Mr Keheliya Rambukwella of engaging in "anti-government activism" in breach of their visa conditions. The IFJ unequivocally denies this has occurred.

At the beginning of the questioning by Sri Lankan officials, Ms Park was confronted with an extensive dossier covering in detail her 17 visits to Sri Lanka over 15 years. She has been subjected to lengthy interrogations of up to nine hours focusing on her movements in Sri Lanka and her associations with local media personnel.

The IFJ believes this move by Sri Lankan officials is an attempt to intimidate and harass journalists inside and outside Sri Lanka to prevent reporting on the realities of life in Sri Lanka in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, CHOGM, which begins in Colombo on November 15.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has declined to attend CHOGM due to concerns about human rights abuses under the Rajapaksa regime.

The IFJ has been working in Sri Lanka for almost 20 years to protect media rights and promote and foster a culture of ethical, independent, public service journalism.

The IFJ has grave concerns about the safety of media personnel inside Sri Lanka arising from this incident. The IFJ is also deeply concerned about the safety of media personnel in Sri Lanka over the long term, most immediately once international leaders leave the country after the CHOGM meeting ends on November 17.
