British PM goes to Jaffna: Cameron in 'robust' talks over human rights

(Lanka-e-News-15.Nov.2013,11.30PM) David Cameron has clashed with the president of Sri Lanka as he pushed for action to protect the rights of its minority Tamil community.

Downing Street said the PM "pressed his points very directly and robustly" in an hour-long meeting with Mahinda Rajapaksa at a Commonwealth summit.

Mr Cameron's convoy was earlier mobbed by demonstrators on a visit to the north of the country.

Mr Rajapaksa says he has brought peace and stability to Sri Lanka.

The Tamils' treatment at the end of the country's civil war in 2009 has dominated the run-up to the the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm), taking place in the capital Colombo.

Mr Cameron has insisted there should be a proper investigation into alleged Sri Lankan war crimes in the final months of the conflict, saying a process of "truth-telling" was essential for reconciliation.

In a historic move, Mr Cameron travelled to the Tamil-dominated north of the country - the first international leader to do so since Sri Lankan independence in 1948 - before holding face-to-face talks with the country's president.

At one point, the PM's convoy was surrounded by more than 200 protesters holding pictures of loved ones who they claim were killed by the Sri Lankan armed forces or have disappeared.

Mr Cameron said the visit - in which he also toured a temporary refugee camp and newspaper office whose printing presses have been burnt - had "drawn attention to the plight" of the Tamil minority in the country.

He said the first-hand accounts he had heard of journalists who have been attacked and of a young woman who had grown up in a refugee camp would "stay with him" for a long time.

Mr Cameron said staging the summit in Sri Lanka had already resulted in positive changes, but the authorities needed to do much more to show they respected human and political rights.

"The fact is about this country that there is a chance of success because the war is over, the terrorism has finished, the fighting is done," he said.

"Now what's needed is generosity and magnanimity from the Sri Lankan government to bring the country together.

"And I think coming here, listening to these people, hearing these arguments, helps to draw attention to their plight. I think the spotlight has been shone on Sri Lanka and people can see the good and the bad."

The BBC's political editor Nick Robinson, who is travelling with Mr Cameron, said several protestors had been thrown to the floor by police as they tried to approach the prime minister's vehicle with photographs of relatives "disappeared" in the civil war and petitions.

He stressed that the demonstration had not been violent, but the prime minister had been made "fully aware of their grievances and their grief".

The UK prime minister has defied calls for him to boycott the Commonwealth summit in protest against alleged human rights abuses.

President Rajapaksa rejects accusations of rape, executions and indiscriminate shelling, saying the end of the war had brought peace, stability and the chance of greater prosperity to the country.

But campaigners have said an international investigation is needed into the bloody conclusion to the civil war, in which UN estimates some 40,000 people were killed.

"The Sri Lankans have got their own domestic process, but frankly it's fatally flawed and it's not going to deliver any real justice to the people who were killed," David Mepham, UK director of campaign group Human Rights Watch, said.

"The other thing, which is equally important, is that there needs to be real pressure on the ongoing human rights issues. This isn't just a problem of the past."

The prime ministers of Canada, India and Mauritius are staying away from the summit in protest over the allegations.

Gordon Campbell, the Canadian High Commissioner to the UK, told the BBC that Sri Lanka had "turned its back on the very principles that the Commonwealth espouses".

The Labour Party said Mr Cameron's presence was a "reward" for the Sri Lanka president.

"There was a naivety about the British government's approach to this summit," shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander said.

"The scale of the suffering has not been challenged in the way it should have been in past months."

The prime minister has dismissed Labour's call for a boycott as "rank hypocrisy", pointing out it was his predecessor Gordon Brown who originally agreed the summit venue in 2009.

The Prince of Wales, who celebrated his 65th birthday on Thursday, is representing the Queen at the biennial event which he opened earlier.

Prince Charles told the summit: "Each one of us is here because of the hope and trust we place in the Commonwealth to bring that 'touch of healing' to our troubles and deliver the very best future for our people."

There was heavy security around the Palaly air base near Jaffna when the aircraft carrying the British delegation landed.

David Cameron first went to the famous Jaffna library to meet the main Tamil political party leaders.

Hundreds of relatives of those who went missing in the government's war against the Tamil Tiger rebels held a protest rally to attract his attention.

Some of them had tied black ribbons over their mouths and some were holding photos of their missing relatives.

They were all shouting slogans demanding international investigation into alleged war crimes.

When the British delegation was leaving the building, protesters surged forward to get their attention pushing photographs of their missing loved ones and petitions towards the convoy.

Police pushed them back; some of the protesting women fell to the ground. Pro-government supporters also held a protest rally outside the library.

Mr Cameron has also visited the leading Tamil Daily Uthayan's office, which was torched and several of its reporters killed during the war.

Many Tamils in Jaffna have broadly welcomed the visit of Mr Cameron saying it has helped to highlight their issues to the outside world.

Colombo CHOGM 2013 creating ignominious record : least members attended summit in history

(Lanka-e-News-16.Nov.2013, 11.00PM) The much hyped Commonwealth heads of governments conference (CHOGM) 2013 began yesterday(15) morning in Colombo but not before creating an ignominious record as the CHOGM with the least number of participating heads of governments , in its history. Though the foreign Ministry revealed yesterday evening that 23 government heads were to arrive , by this morning , 21 only of the 53 scheduled commonwealth heads came for the CHOGM thereby creating a record as the CHOGM that was attended by least number of heads of governments in its entire history – a poor reflection on the lawless Rajapakse regime hosting it. The number of heads of governments who participated in the previous CHOGMs are as follows :

MaRa divides country in the name of CHOGM: those in the north cannot visit south and vice versa

(Lanka-e-News-14.Nov.2013, 5.30PM) During the period of the LTTE terror the people of the south were unable to go to the north and vice versa , and consequent upon which the people had to face the most evil fallouts. Now , after the LTTE terror has ended the Medamulana Rajapakse regime which is keeping the people under its ruthless dictatorial iron heels is also barring the people of the south from traveling to the north and vice versa, it is reported.

The ban imposed on traveling from the south to the north was applied to the channel 4 media personnel , and the ban imposed on those traveling from the north to the south was applied to the three bus loads of Tamil residents of the north who came for the human rights conference in Colombo.

When 6 British media personnel of channel 4 who came to SL in view of the commonwealth summit and on visas issued duly by the Rajapakse regime , were heading for Kilinochchi from Colombo in the north bound train , they were stopped at Anuradhapura and sent back to Colombo by a Government backed group of goons and thugs .

Interestingly , in the same train of the media personnel , a team of regime’s intelligence division members have also traveled.

It were north central province chief minister S M Ranjith and his brother deputy Minister S M Chandrasena who had organized this violent goon and thug group . Public relations officer T. Upasena of the chief Minister and co ordinating secretary Nilantha Ekanayake of the deputy Minister had been present among the group of goons organized to obstruct and harass the media personnel. The MaRa police too had acted most strangely. D Pier a senior journalist who was in the group said , this action against them is most deplorable and discouraging vis a vis the President’s invitation extended to them to visit the country while assuring the media personnel that they could go anywhere across the country and make reports. UNP decides to boycott CHOGM-MaRa asks pardon and implores opposition leader to attend

(Lanka-e-News-15.Nov.2013,11.30PM) The UNP leadership council that held its inaugural session this morning decided to reverse the earlier decision taken by the UNP to participate in the opening session only of the Commonwealth heads of state summit.

The prime reason for this boycott of the Commonwealth inaugural session is the attack launched on the opposition leader’s vehicle yesterday while the police were idly watching and enjoying the spectacle. Besides , so far no arrest have been made in this connection.

The UNP leadership council was compelled to take this decision to boycott , because safeguarding of the right of freedom of expression of the citizens of its member countries of the commonwealth ; and ensuring its governments abiding by the rules of law and respecting the people’s sovereignty which are among its covenants had been seriously infringed by yesterday’s incident of violence, whereby no certification can be given to confirm that the Rajapakse government is acting within those covenants.

Though Ravi Karunanayake was of the view that the commonwealth sessions shall not be boycotted , the majority took the counter view. Meanwhile MaRa who got , spoken via the phone to Ranil Wickremesinghe and asked for pardon , and implored him not to boycott the assembly. Wickremesinghe had pointed out that since no one has been arrested following this government backed attack on the opposition leader , and this decision to boycott the assembly is not his personal decision but that of the UNP leadership council . High court confirms it is SL heroin ring hero going to be the Commonwealth summit chairman

(Lanka-e-News-13.Nov.2013, 6.30PM) Sri Lanka President Medamulana MaRa who is going to be the chairman of the sublime Commonwealth summit in Colombo and therefore to hold aloft the Commonwealth’s rich traditions confirmed unequivocally the truth in the old maxim, a leech even when put in an elevated position in a silk bed will in keeping with its inherent and inborn foul traits seek only the filthy dust below , by releasing today a heroin peddler from prison acquitting and exonerating him of all the most grave and heinous charges under which he was detained , and sending him happily home .

This heroin was imported from Pakistan to Sri Lanka along with a consignment of potatoes in 2010 , and was detected by the customs officers at Orugodawatte. The heroin trafficker Dennis Perera was also taken into custody along with the consignment. Later a case was filed in the Colombo High court against him as the prime suspect . Today , at noon when the high court judge Preethi Padman Surasena was about to hear this case , the attorney general (AG) Palitha Fernando informed court in writing that the case is being withdrawn against the massive heroin peddler because there is no evidence to indict the suspect. The high court judge accordingly released the suspect without uttering a word against it. At the same time the AG had sent copies of this letter to the Director ,Police crime investigation division and the OIC of the anti narcotics Bureau.

It is the consensus among the legal circles that the attorney general’s department has now become under bestial President Mahinda Rajapaksha who is a legal expert on jungle laws. Obviously the AG department is no longer independent.

The most vexatious question is , if this suspect is released on the ground that there is no evidence against him now , how come he was not released at the magistrate court level ? Isn’t it because the case was so grave and there was adequate evidence against the suspect that the case went up to high court ? Isn’t it therefore because the attorney general’s department has been transformed into another MaRa ‘s law ‘mockery general department’ that the AG suddenly released the suspect in this unholy haste ?

There is also another nefarious side to this amazing dispensation of (in)justice.

This same high court judge Surasena who today released the heroin trafficker arrested with 8 kilos heroin, keeping his mouth , eyes and ears shut , passed death sentence four months ago on a father of five children , a heroin addict who had just 4 grams of heroin in his possession. This judge who is noted for being very strict , similarly had passed death sentences on 17 heroin addicts . However this same buffoon of a judge like a bat that is blind and excretes through its mouth had no qualms about exonerating the heroin peddler Dennis Perera arrested with 8 kilos of heroin, of all charges and releasing him.

If an AG orders to release a suspect and withdraws the case , and if the judge has no option otherwise than that , it is most ugly and sordid however for a judge expected to adorn the bench rather than disgrace it to carry out that order like an inmate of a deaf and dumb Institution without uttering so much as a word against it in open court to justify his own action and suggest that he was instigated by AG’s order.

This lucky heroin peddler Wedage Malith Dennis Perera is none other than the son in law of former judge , former prisons commissioner and present chairman of the consumer authority, Rumi Marzook.

It is well to recall Medamulana MaRa had publicly and shamelessly declared many a time ‘apey minihek nam apey yuthukama eka beragenima’ ( if he is ‘our man’ it is our duty to rescue him) . MaRa and Rumi have got together and saved ‘apey miniha’, but isn’t a heroin peddler who is duly charged and whoever rescuing him on the ground that there is no evidence, equally guilty ?

Rajapakses’ hired army thugs attack opposition leader who was on the way to human rights function

(Lanka-e-News-13.Nov.2013, 10.00PM) Rajapakse regime soldiers in civil clothes have attacked the official car of the opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe when he was being driven to the 2013 function of the human rights commenced by the Samagi Balavegaya today. A spokesman for the opposition leader said , but for the timely intervention of the security personnel the shutters of the vehicle could have been broken and the opposition leader might have been assaulted. These assailants have been identified as soldiers of the Panagoda army camp.

Mahinda Kahandagamage a shameless double faced stooge of the regime together with a group opposing the human rights function had joined with the soldiers in civil attire , and about 200 to 300 of them had staged protests hurling filthy abuses . This group had been transported by government vehicles . Among them were vehicles of the government public administration. There was also another group congregating to break into the human rights exhibition ground , while the police are turning a blind eye , it is learnt.

Ranil Wickremesinghe had entered the venue of the function through another door. The unlawful incident had been reported to the Speaker (He is also Regime Member Chamal Rajapaksha) and the IGP.

An organizer of the function questioned , while the third covenant of the commonwealth is the right of freedom of expression , is this the way that right is being safeguarded by obstructing the opposition leader who held Prime Minister post twice from participating in the human rights function ?

Some time ago too , the vehicle of the opposition leader was attacked by the Rajapakse hired soldiers when he went to attend the funerals of fishermen at Beruwala who died as a result of the hurricane.
